Where: UHM Art Building Auditorium
What: Hui Ola Pono will be co-sponsoring the screening of the documentary VESSEL on International Womenʻs Day with the UHM Women’s Center, Native Hawaiian Student Services, AAUW-UH, and the Planned Parenthood Campus Club. Dr. Pat Steinhoff & Dr. Soon of JABSOM will be offering comments in post-film discussion.
VESSEL is the story of Dr. Rebecca Gomepert: one of a women who hears and answers a calling, transforming a widely improbable idea into a global movement. Sailing a ship around the world providing abortions at sea for women with no legal alternative, she faces governmental, religious, and military blockades. She realizes she can use new technologies to bypass law. Using WHO sanctioned protocols with pills and an underground network of activists, women are taught how to handle abortion themselves. A discussion on reproductive justice will also follow the screening.
Pupus will be provided, funded in part by the Student Activity and Program Fee Board. Wear your Hui shirt to represent Public Health at this sure-to-be awesome event!
